Who on earth is Daniel Gawthrop?

Daniel Gawthrop is the author of five published non-fiction books and one novel (check them out at his website) who has enjoyed a long and varied career as a journalist, editor, and communications professional in Vancouver and Bangkok, with short stops in London and Yangon (Rangoon). Daniel writes about all the taboo dinner subjects—sex, religion, and politics—from a progressive human rights perspective aimed at creating better understanding between people of different backgrounds and beliefs. From book reviews to personal essays, he’s unsparingly frank on everything from global politics to the culture wars plaguing North American society. He’ll also weigh in on the wonders of the great outdoors and the counterintuitive pleasures of being a gay man who plays hockey.

Why Subscribe?

A lot of writers prefer the comfort of a niche, establishing themselves from early in their careers as authorities on one subject. That’s not Daniel. His books are about AIDS education, party politics, forest preservation, inter-racial attraction, the Roman Catholic Church, and the struggle for democracy in Burma/Myanmar. The common denominator? Political conflict, and the desire to make things better. In both his books and his other writing, Daniel seeks deeper understanding of the issues at play.

Who is this for?

If you are someone who identifies as left liberal or progressive, but are frustrated by the toxicity of social media and are looking for a more nuanced take on today’s issues, Daniel would love you to join his audience and share feedback as well.

What can I expect?

Daniel will aim to post weekly, possibly more frequently.

By subscribing to his newsletter, you’ll get full access to his latest thoughts, as well as his publication archives.

If it’s there for free, why pay for it?

Daniel appreciates all his subscribers. Building an audience takes time, and free subscribers are most helpful in getting the word out. While he no longer relies upon writing income to make ends meet, he also appreciates being paid a modest sum as recognition of the decades he has put into becoming a better writer. Daniel will soon be offering content exclusively for those who take out paid subscriptions.
